What Is Organic

Printable Version

From being just a small, specialist part of the grocery trade at the start of the 1990’s, organic food is today one of the fastest growing sectors, and is being bought by an ever increasing number of people. Demand is currently increasing at around 13.4% a year and most shoppers now buy some organic products at least once a week, but why has organic food become so popular and what exactly does organic mean?

The Soil AssociationThe first thing to know is that organic is a legally defined term. It is regulated by the European Union food directive 2091/92; also by the British Government, which requires that only foods which have been independently certified by UK approved bodies can legally carry an organic label.

The largest and best known of the certifying bodies is The Soil Association. You’ll find their logo on all Yeo Valley Organic products. They inspect every single recipe and regularly check our dairy as well before issuing their organic certification.

It’s a stringent routine, but the best possible independent assurance that every Yeo Valley product is genuinely organic, which means that the ingredients used in our yogurts and other products are fully traceable and come from farms adopting approved organic methods.

It assures you that there is no corner-cutting at Yeo Valley Organic and that you can have 100% confidence in the organic authenticity of every product bearing our green grass tick.
