our farmers

Our own dairy farms, Holt and Yoxter, are run by our very dedicated staff – which is why they’re such an important part of the family. Jon is our farms manager, and Steve and Richard are the herd managers and Mark looks after the young stock.

We’re also doing our best to bring other farmers round to our organic way of thinking – over the years, we’ve helped around a hundred family farms by promising to buy their milk.

why do we buy milk from other farms?

We have our own herd of British Friesians, but even all their milk put together is nowhere near enough for all the things we make. Over the last 15 or so years we’ve recruited more and more organic dairy farms, and today more than 100 farms mostly in the southwest send their milk to us.

how did this come about?

Well, in the early 1990s there was a big change in the milk industry. The Milk Marketing Board, which bought all the milk in Britain, was broken up and suddenly it was up to farmers to find new buyers for their milk.

Back then there was only a handful of organic dairy farmers dedicated to the more sustainable systems but had a hard time finding a market for their milk. We were making lots of yogurt for supermarkets, and we got talking with these organic dairy farmers about making an organic yogurt.

The upshot was that the Organic Milk Suppliers Co-operative was established (OMSCo), and in 1994 our organic yogurt was born.

This is one way we’re trying to save British farming – and we’re not stopping anytime soon, because we plan on doing this forever.
