we’re 100% organic on our farms
Over the years we’ve managed to convert our farms to being 100% organic. We just think it makes good common sense and is the right way to do things. We’re proud of the standards we’ve achieved and like to do even more where we can. Here a few examples of things that help demonstrate why organic is such a brilliant approach to farming.
why are there no tractor tracks across the middle of our fields?
An odd question, but the reason there are no tractor tracks is because we don’t spray pesticides or use artificial fertilisers. That’s good news for the soil, the rivers, the grass and the cows. Instead of using artificial fertilisers we rotate our crops and encourage nature to build the fertility.
we make our own energy
We’re not keen on burning fossil fuels – they’re dirty, expensive, and they’re running out. We use solar panels to power our buildings. We’ve got a whole field full of them to power our milk bottling place. We also grow elephant grass to burn in our boiler. It sucks in more CO2 when it grows than it releases when it burns.
we rotate our crops
Farmers have been doing field rotation for hundreds and hundreds of years. For us, that means using the land wisely – growing clover and grass and then bringing the cows in to graze it (which helps fix nitrogen in the soil so it’s more fertile). It’s just good common sense. We’re always open to new ideas though, like using satellite GPS to help us record what grows best where.
we recycle and use recycled things
The cardboard on our packs is made from recycled paper and our pots are made from recycled plastic. Waste is just a terrible thing. We even mix our the paper we shred in the office with our elephant grass and turn it into fuel pellets to heat our buildings. Waste not, want not!
